I was cleaning out my man cave and I found two jugs of antifreeze that I bought
years
ago, and they were still sealed, and they gave me
cash
for them without batting an eyelash. $32.75... They have my loyalty. They also let you purchase tools and return them when you are finished with them...

I rented a tool to try getting my steering wheel hub off. Despite the fact that the tool wasn’t designed for steering wheel hub removal, when it broke outside the store the lady insisted that I didn’t pay for it, and then proceeded to give me two more tools to try. Eventually got that damn hub off, returned the two tools and in the end was charged $0.

In my neck of the woods, they used to be called Murray’s. My favorite thing was that if you called ahead, they would set your parts aside ready for pickup AND give you a 10% discount. I don’t know if that was a chain-wide thing, or just a sweet deal from my local store, but the offer went away after they started to turn into O’Reillys.

The manager of the O-O-O’Reilly’s in some random part of south Florida went out of his way to get two 5 gallon gas cans set aside for my brother when he was evacuating Hurricane Irma. Only charged him for one, and he said it ended up being the difference between him abandoning his car and hitch hiking, vs. arriving safely in Pennsecola.
Now we’re customers for lyfe.

Unfortunately, here in Maine, OReilly’s seems to not have the best reputation, amongst me and my family. They used to be VIP shops, which had reasonably maintenance at reasonable prices.
If we need parts we usually go to NAPA, AutoZone, or AAP. I’ve ordered most of my parts online through 1A... except for my FR brake caliper, and my alternator (which I don’t know why, but my car just eats alternators for the most part...)

They were previously known as Checker Auto Parts in my area.

Miles upon miles of trees. It’s kind of scary to think you could go 20, 30 miles without ever seeing a single sign of civilization.
Maine effectively has a radial gradient from the NH border - the farther away you go, the older and more rural things get. Adjust density along I-95 up until about Bangor or Orono, then just forget about everything past that up until about Presque Isle.
Downeast Maine is a place I haven’t been to in a long time, but the last time I was there, it was a time capsule back to the late 90s.

I think of Maine as a sort of Florida in that it was originally wild and unpeopled when the nation was settled. And inhospitable. Fortunately for Maine, the jackasses all moved to Florida, though perhaps Maine claimed it’s share; I couldn’t say, but someone did coin the term “Floridiot.”

Nah, some of them moved to Massachusetts. Did you know that Maine was once part of Massachusetts?
During the major storm a while back which knocked out power for most of the state, I decided to peek around Twitter and see what people were saying. Many of the electricians I could find that came up to assist mentioned something about Maine having “the nicest people I’ve met.”

Others moved to Cleveland. And North Carolina.
Now that I’ve become a Californian, no place I’ve found compares compellingly, even with much inherent California suckness.

A lot of the Californians I’ve ended up talking to don’t even know that Maine’s a state. When I tell them where it is, it’s like “how do you even live tho”

They’ll get over it. Maybe I’ll move to Maine when I retire. Territory worth exploring, says I. Snow, yes, but lots of salt?

Depends on where you go. My town dumps lots of sand and very little salt on back roads, and plows horribly. Nearby towns plow a lot better and use salt more liberally.
In short, winterize your car by undercoating it and giving it a good wax before it starts dropping below freezing.

One nice thing about living out west is no rustbuckets.
